Customized guidance and strategic support
Excellent instruction is a practice, not a policy. As states and districts make the transition to follow the science of reading and learning, we help a diverse set of partners identify, implement, and strengthen evidence-based, knowledge-building curriculum and instruction.
Knowledge Matters Solutions brings deep expertise and insights from different systems, contexts, and communities to this work. Our team of former teachers and instructional leaders, curriculum designers, higher education faculty, and researchers designs and delivers tailored services, including:
Long-term partnerships
We help school and system administrators, instructional leaders, and other decision-makers articulate and advance a coherent vision for instructional excellence in districts, states, and agencies. We guide comprehensive reviews of literacy materials and classroom practice to find bright spots and identify high-impact adjustments in curriculum, instruction, and professional learning, grounded in literacy research and cognitive science. Our flexible approach is right-sized to fit local needs as they change from year to year, and can include classroom observations and data walks, educator convenings, long-range planning, and more.
Strategic advice
We support nonprofits, funders, and curriculum organizations to ensure their best ideas advance effective classroom practice. As trusted on-call advisors, we bridge gaps in institutional knowledge and ensure organizations capitalize on up-to-date insights from research. Through quickfire strategy reviews, leading vision-setting retreats, and more, we help our partners expand evidence-based, knowledge-building instruction in schools and systems.
Curriculum improvement
We coach curriculum designers and publishers to assess their materials for knowledge-building using lessons from cognitive science and the Knowledge Matters Review Tools. Rooted in research and insights from classroom visits, the Tools can also be used by curriculum designers to ensure materials are content-rich, relevant, and relate to student knowledge. We highlight opportunities to expand or improve curriculum-based professional learning that grows understanding of the sciences of reading and learning.
Communications and video production expertise
Drawing on more than 10 years of experience through the Knowledge Matters School Tour, we partner with states, districts, and publishers to capture and share implementation success stories that celebrate bright spots, generate community buy-in, and support training and professional learning. Grounded in research on effective change leadership, we believe clear communication matters: leaders must name the change they hope to see, explain why it matters, and consistently connect daily practice to a larger vision for student learning. Thoughtful storytelling helps make that vision tangible—building inspiration, traction, and momentum for lasting change at scale.
